The promise and perils of Antarctic fishes. The remarkable life forms of the Southern Ocean have much to teach science about survival, but human activity is threatening their existence.

چکیده
Beneath the surface of the Southern Ocean, in the deep waters of the continental shelf and continental slope of Antarctica, a magnificent fauna consisting of over 320 known species of fish thrives in the cold and dark. These fish are uniquely adapted to the extreme environment in which they live. Over the course of millennia, they have evolved a remarkable range of physiological and biochemical features, the most visually stunning of which is that some lack haemoglobin (Fig 1). Yet, these species are under threat from global climate change and fishing, and the secrets they might unlock for science could be lost in the next decades if action is not taken.

One of the most controversial topics in modern bioethics, science, and philosophy is the beginning of individual human life. In the seemingly endless debate, strongly stimulated by recent technologic advances in human reproduction, a synthesis between scientific data and hypothesis, philosophical thought, and issues of humanities has become a necessity to deal with ethical, juridical, and socia...
متن کاملLife at Body Temperatures below 0°C: The Physiology and Biochemistry of Antarctic Fishes
Fishes of the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica are dominated by species of the suborder Notothenoidei. For ~14MY, these highly successful fishes have evolved under stable thermal conditions that result in a body temperature of ca. 0°C throughout their life histories. Evolution in this chronically cold environment has led to unusual physiological and biochemical characteristics. In some cas...

متن کاملThe layered structure in exchange flows between two basins (Middle and Southern basins of the Caspian Sea)
Ocean waters often show layered structures especially where exchange flow between two basins occurs. These structures are often attributed to processes such as double.diffusive convection, internal waves, turbulent modulated mixing. In this paper by examining the vertical structures of temperature, salinity and density, of the middle parts of Caspian Sea it is shown that such layered structure ...
